The Large Truck Causation Study: an answer on how to cut-down on commercial truck crashes and injuries?
There are many valuable resources devoted to reporting on crashes involving commercial trucks, including semi-trailers and eighteen wheelers. Perhaps the most important is "The Large Truck Crash Causation Study" or LTCCS.
The LTCCS represents a three year collection of data and is the first ever effort to analyze critical factors and events which contribute to serious truck crashes.
The LTCCS was the result of the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act of 1999 seeking to analyze the causes of commercial truck crashes.
The data is quite comprehensive and can be downloaded at http://www.ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/ltccs/default.asp
Information is available in aggregate and for individual crashes and includes crash-scene diagrams, pictures, and inspection information for both vehicles and their drivers.
The database also can be used to analyze and investigate crash causes.
Ultimately, ten critical issues for large and commercial truck safety are outlined. They willbe the subject of tomorrow's blog of the day.
