It seems like every time one hears of a car traveling in the wrong direction on an area highway death ensues. Just such a traffic incident occurred in Gaithersburg last evening and the wrong-bound driver was killed. A 2011 Honda Accord operated by  25 year-old Erica Choi of Germantown, Maryland  began traveling in the Northbound lanes of I-270 in the wrong direction and collided with a Mercedes.

The Mercedes driver was reportedly taken to Suburban Hospital.

The inevitable question, why do these car crashes occur?  There are many instances where alcohol plays a role but even that doesn't satisfactorily explain how a driver on a major highway like I-270 can access the opposite bound lanes. Sadly with her death Ms. Choi's actions may never be understood.
