Some interesting information on the role of drunk drivers in fatal crashes has come to light. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reports that more than one third of all car and truck crash deaths are people other than the drunk or impaired driver. The impact of alcohol related accidents is ten thousand lost lives per year.
The good news is that national effort to reduce drunk driving has had a profound effect on the nation's driving habits. The N.H.T.S.A. reports that 40 years ago roadside surveys found that 1 in 12 drivers were found to be impaired or intoxicated. The most recent surveys find that 1 in 50 are driving drunk.
The bottom line, sixty billion dollars in costs to our economy every year as a result of drunk driving.
