Tragedy has struck the Washington area Metro system again and while it appears that the death toll will be much lower this time, it is impossible not to hearken back to the Fort Totten tragedy of June 22, 2009. The palpable fear of the WMATA Metro system in the aftermath of that horrible train crash may be hard to remember for some but it left an indelible imprint on its victims and their families.

Now, initial reporting suggests a myriad of problems reminiscent of that day at Fort Totten. Poor communication. Check. Poor response time for victims. Check. Cause of the incident...We have no idea. Checkmate.

This will now entail a full investigation and in the meantime our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.
