Transportation secretary Ray LaHood has proposed a ban on use of cell phones for railroad operators and their crews. It seems like common sense. Could it be coming to Metro?

Train Crew CellPhone Rule Makes Sense

With the plethora of new distracted driving laws it just seems to make sense that train engineers and their operating crews be subject to similair bans. http://www.maryland-law.com/blog/distracted-driving-usdot-joins-the-party.cfm

That is precisely what Transporation Secretary, Ray LaHood is proposing.

Under rules proposed on Monday, handheld electronic use including cell phones would be prohibited for conductors, switchmen and engineers.

This is likely an outgrowth of the catstrophic California Metrolink commuter crash that killed 25. Investigation of that incident revealed that the commuter train engineer was texting at the time of the crash.
