NTSB's Most-Wanted Safety List-Plane Crash Avoidance

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) publishes annual lists of safety improvements for each of the transportation areas it oversees. Today we focus on eliminating aviation and plane crashes.

The basic suggestions are comparatively simple to describe but more to difficult to implement.

They are improved runway safety, require image recorders, improve pilot training and overall proficiency, improve the safety of EMS flights, reduce fatigue related crash and effectuate programs to more safely deal with icing conditions.

We have previously discussed deadly EMS helicopter crashes here and the NTSB has identified policies to reduce EMS crashes through recognition that weather conditions can kill. http://www.maryland-law.com/blog/2008-helicopter-emergency-medical-services-deadliest-year.cfm

Overall the suggestions seems sensible and we will discuss them in a larger context as we examine the recommendations regarding reduction of car and large truck crashes next.
