Maryland Governor, Martin O'Malley Blasted Metro on WTOP radio today. Just how bad was it?

While overall Maryland and the District of Columbia have very safe transportation systems the sheer number of people using them and the nature of the buses and trains utilized results in catastrophic injuries on a fairly routine basis.

Maryland Governor Blasts Metro

Maryland Governor, martin O'Malley appeared on WTOP's "Ask the Governor" today and blasted Metro's safety record. When asked if the system was safe he equivocated and sort of changed the subject.

This is not a good thing for WMATA at a time when future funding hangs perilously in the balance.

O'Malley criticized Metro's openess and transparency and called it "The worst safety record in the country."

Citing recent near-misses and the June 22, 2009 Fort Totten crash, the Governor stated that he "did not want to have on his conscience another death on the Metro system because we wre not exercising enough oversight."
