Elsewhere on this website, we have focused on the overall increase in car, truck, motorcycle and bus crash deaths. One of the recurrent themes in all such analyses is "ALCOHOL."

This is not lost on the United States Department of Transportation and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Thus, their newly initiated "Drive sober or get pulled over" program.

The need for some sort of effective enforcement is clear. More than 10,000 people were killed in drunk driving accidents in 2011 and 2012. More than 1/3 of those crash fatalities were not the drunk driver. 91 kids were killed when passengers of the drunk driver and more than 710 were either pedestrians or bicyclists

So what is the USDOT solution? More police on the crackdown and more commercials warning would be drunk drivers to stay off the roads. I hope it works.
