Through the years we have ruminated on our website about a positive development in the world of car and truck crashes, fewer fatalities. We have hypothesized why this phenomemon has been occurring until now. The sobering fact is that traffic crash related deaths were up in 2012.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, confirmed yesterday that car and truck crash related deaths were up in 2012 after a steady five year decline.Overall 33,561 highway deaths were reported in 2012, up more than 1,000 from 2011.
Why this is happening is not obvious with the usual speculation including improvements in the economy yielding more drivers and more miles driven. The good news is that the preliminary numbers for 2013 auger an improvement which lead to the inevitable question, the economy is better still in 2013, how come fatalities are declining again?
