A Prince Georges County, Maryland civil jury awarded the family of a deceased inmate more than $2 million. The defendants were a private dump truck operator and the Maryland State Corrections Department.
The nearly two-week long trial concerned a deadly crash which took place on August 23, 2007 on the Capital Beltway in the vicinity of Landover, Maryland.
The victim, Rodney Jenkins was on a work detail near Maryland Route 202, when he and his co-workers attempted to cross the exit 17 ramp and he was struck by a dump truck operated by Wayne H. Goss, Sr.
The impact crushed the victim's legs and he endured great pain and suffering before expiring.
The tragic crash has resulted in a change in state corrections policies as inmates are now driven across ramps rather than traveling on foot.
