The National Highway Transportation Safety Authority (NHTSA) reports that traffic or crash related fatalities declined in 2010. This reduction in car, truck and pedestrian crash deaths is part of a broader long-term trend in America spanning many years.

The overall number of traffic fatalities in 2010 seems large at 32,788 and yet this represents a 3% decrease from 2009, despite the fact that there were more total passenger miles driven. Across the last five years crash deaths nationwide have gone down some 25% to the lowest level since 1949 !

A number of factors are thought to be responsible for this encouraging trend, including better safety equipment, more widespread use of the safety equipment and more eactive enforcement of laws prohibiting drunk and drugged driving.
